Description
The villages in peatland areas have a highly potential natural fiber resource that is not yet optimally utilized. Beside Lepironia (Purun), there are a lot of other plants which the fiber could be used for handicrafts and have high economic value. At this time, most of the people are aware of the importance of using enviromentally friendly products thereby opening a wide opportunity for business in natural fiber handicrafts.
All this time, the craftsmen have a fairly good weaving skill but the products they made do not have wide variation and have low selling value, thus they only do it as a side job.
Based on this case, a training was proposed with purposes as below:
- Improve the knowledge of other natural raw materials and how to process them
- Improve the craftsmen skills, especially in designs which are highly demanded by foreign markets and have high economic value.
The training is in the form of direct practice from raw material processing to finishing process using Lepironia (Purun) or other natural fiber material.
The participants of this training came from 3 regencies and 2 provinces, Barito Kaula Regency and Hulu Sungai Utara Regency from South Kalimantan Province and Kapuas District from Central Kalimantan Province. This training was held in Tanggulangin, Nanggulan and Kulon Progo Yogyakarta.
This training is the collaboration result between Asosiasi Serat Alam and CV. Indo Seagrass who have the experience of fostering natural fiber craftsmen and international marketing network. There will be a follow up partnership action in the form of marketing and institutional strengthening of the purun artisans both in South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.
