Description
On the night of November the 3rd 2024, Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano in the Flores Timur Regency of East Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia erupted, followed by hundreds of eruptions with varying intensity in the same month. The eruption caused the death of 10 people and injured dozens of others, displacing more than 13.000 people and burying homes and farmlands with heavy volcanic ash. Survivors are facing respiratory health issues while the agriculture sector suffered from severe losses, because of crop failure due to the contamination of the soil and plants with ash.
Oxfam in Indonesia and Penabulu, in partnership with JMK, CIS Timor, YPPS, and Pikul, is carrying out a 3 month disaster emergency response from November 2024 to December 2024. Our interventions are spread across WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and Shelter sectors, through the distribution of nonfood items in the form of 155 packages of hygiene kits for 155 Head of Households, as well as 400 tarps, 254 buckets, and 400 jerry cans for 6 field settlement posts.. The collaboration also conducted a JNA (Joint Needs Assessments) on 6 field settlement posts to gain information on the various sectors/issue, i.e. WASH, Shelter, Food Security and Nutrition, Health, Access to Market, Education, Child Protection, and Gender-based Violence. The JNA produces recommendations that will feed into informing both the immediate and longer-term response options toward equitable recovery. We are also part of several coordination mechanisms, such as the Desk Relawan Erupsi Gunung Lewotobi Laki-laki, WASH Subcluster of Nusa Tenggara Timur, and the Education Post.
