Description
The Water Justice Fund (WJF) is an innovative funding initiative focused on empowering women and girls to lead climate action and water justice in vulnerable areas. Using participatory decision-making mechanisms, WJF provides grants to women’s groups that advance local adaptation to climate change, particularly in remote areas lacking access to clean water and sanitation. In addition to supporting grassroots solutions, WJF also supports feminist advocacy movements that address water and climate issues more broadly. The initiative aims to accelerate water justice and sustainable systemic change.
To ensure its effectiveness, WJF is piloting the concept in three vulnerable locations in eastern Indonesia. Through field data collection and community-level needs assessments, the program seeks to evaluate existing community-based organizations and gauge the capacity and willingness of women’s groups to engage in local adaptation action. WJF will also explore the potential for co-financing with local governments and other stakeholders to strengthen women-led climate adaptation action.
