Sustainable Market
The approach of value chain (VCD) has been based on the understanding that the poor and their economic opportunities are strongly influenced by the dynamic market system in where they are located. This approach works within the framework of interventions that try to influence the structure and systems, as well as the pattern of the relationship in the value chain to enable small and medium enterprises to be able to improve their products and processes, and to contribute and to get more benefit from a production chain.
Penabulu believes that in addition to the improvement and refinement of the commodity value chain, comprehensive market intervention should also be conducted. M4P (Making Market Work for the Poor) is an approach to develop a more favorable market system for the poor, offering increased capacity and the level of their lives, by identifying solutions to systemic problems and encourage improvement of the market system on a large scale and ensure the occured changes are permanent and sustainable.
M4P approach will be carried out on the whole market system, in the commodity’s core of market chain, and two additional lenses as supports: lens with supporting function, and lens with formal and informal rules that influence a market system to work properly. Supporting functions may include information links, access to capital, distribution lines and storage, and other functions that often become fundamental obstacles/problems to the market system for the poor.
The program will make the best creations and innovations for facilitating solutions of systemic problems in each commodity/sector, according to respective characteristics, scale and scope of each specific target area of the program; among others by mentoring the development of a business plan based on research, strengthening the management capacity of the business units/Koperasi, business development services, and initiate the establishment of local business development unit.
