Description
In recent years, Indonesia has experienced a shrinking civil space that threatens democracy and civil rights. This phenomenon has seriously pressured the role of civil society, particularly NGOs, in performing their functions. The condition is exacerbated by various factors, including government pressure that makes licensing difficult, discredits, and restricts access to funding for NGOs. Moreover, the decrease in financial support from international donor agencies and the lack of consolidation in advocacy networks have worsened the situation. The Covid-19 pandemic has also exposed existing weaknesses, including limited capacity in facing digital challenges.
In a situation where civil space is shrinking and political disparities are widening approaching the upcoming political year, Indonesian local NGOs are struggling to fulfill their mandates. Without structured intervention, Indonesia’s democracy is predicted to be endangered, and justice is further away from people’s dreams.
The European Union through Civil Society Organisation Thematic Program provide a funding support to strengthen the role of NGOs in policy dialogues, governance reforms, and development, fostering an inclusive, empowered, and independent civil society and sustaining democratic space in Indonesia.
The main focus of this project is to enhance the capacity of local NGO networks in addressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and promoting a fair and inclusive green transition. The hope is that these efforts will make a significant contribution to the Multiannual Indicative Program for CSOs 2021-2027, assisting in achieving specific set goals.
